Bull sharks are among the few large predators that tolerate fresh water, and individuals have been recorded hundreds of kilometres upriver. Fiji built a dive economy on that biology.
Beqa Lagoon, on the southern flank of Viti Levu, spans roughly 390 square kilometres of barrier reef and ranks among the largest lagoons of its kind in the Pacific. Its outer wall draws the animals that gave the Fiji Shark Dive Beqa its reputation.
The lagoon's reputation dates to the 1990s, when operators working out of Pacific Harbour began running baited dives on a stretch of reef off the villages of Galoa and Wainiyabia. Local chiefs set aside traditional fishing rights over the site in exchange for a levy paid by every visiting diver. That arrangement produced the Shark Reef Marine Reserve, declared Fiji's first National Marine Park in 2014. Eight species are logged there across a season: bull, tawny nurse, sicklefin lemon, silvertip, grey reef, whitetip reef, blacktip reef, and, in cooler months, tiger.
Roughly 170 kilometres to the northwest, the Yasawa Islands hold the archipelago's other shark story. Kuata is the southernmost island of that chain, a volcanic outcrop of black basalt and pandanus, and the first landfall on the catamaran run from Port Denarau. Barefoot Kuata Island Resort has worked with marine biologists here since the mid-2010s, identifying bull sharks and reef sharks on a shallow drop-off within swimming distance of the beach. What separates both places from an aquarium is the absence of a cage. On the Beqa wall, divers kneel on sand while a wrangler works the bait drum; off Kuata, snorkelers hold the surface and the animals pass below. The levy collected at these sites funds village trust accounts and mangrove replanting along the Rewa Delta, the nursery ground where juvenile bull sharks spend their first years before moving out to the reef. The economics are blunt and often quoted in fisheries research: a single reef shark is worth far more alive, counted year after year by visitors, than once on a market slab.
